AESD Trustee At-Large: 2010-2018
Local Control of Our Schools
The future of our schools is our decision. With parent and community input, we made significant progress in improving the Anaheim Elementary School District. In a few short years, we were able to:
The parent and community directed district budget and stabilization plan
reflect our values of a student and community centered organization,
retaining classroom staff and programs despite a severe
budget shortfall and declining enrollment.

As your board representative for Area 2, which includes GOALS Charter(Athletics), Patrick Henry(VAPA), John Marshall(VAPA), Melbourne A. Gauer (STEAM), and Loara (VAPA) Schools, I will continue working to ensure the community is heard and all students receive a world-class education. Each school will continue to have the autonomy to offer programs of choice to benefit the students of the community. Let's continue with our accomplishments.
- Cut $13 million from district overhead while reducing class size to 24 to 1.
- Invest $500 million in our schools with on-time and on-budget projects.
- Revitalize world languages, performing arts, and STEAM.
- Shift district leadership to a parent-led, community centered model.

Let's Move Forward Together to Build Community Schools with Local Control
There are several major issues facing our schools today.
1. School and District restructuring are essential in order to increase educational quality and reduce class size. We must complete the restructuring of AESD from a centrally managed district to one that is school centered, significantly reducing administrative overhead. We are one of the highest paying districts in the area for teachers, despite severe budget issues.
2. Instructional Quality is critical to increasing the rigor state standards requires and we have made significant progress in changing our instructional approach and student assessments to meet the needs of every child. As a professional educator and two term board member, I know what works in the classroom and and how to restructure the district to support continuous improvement. I will continue to move us forward.
3. Inclusion of students with special needs in the general education classroom is a civil right and a recent Supreme Court ruling has upheld the right of every student with special needs to have access to rigorous and meaningful academic programs. We have transformed AESD into an inclusive school district, creating equity and opportunity for the disabled.
4. Dual Immersion and English Learners: We have increased access to world language programs for all students and we have specifically expanded our bi-literacy program, enabling students to become fluent in two languages. This will significantly help our large English learner population.
5. Equity and the local control of our schools to create opportunity for all students to access specialized programs, such as world language instruction, honors programs, and the arts and music, has begun to transform schools. Students, parents, staff, and taxpayers collectively manage their own local school within the legal context of the Local Control and Accountability Plan. Henry, Marshall, Loara, and Gauer have all developed their own unique school site plans.
